Blueberry Moon

Blueberry Moon by Gwen Sylvester 10 x 20 acrylic on wood panel
A quiet, still cold night in November in Rural Maine. During the Autumn months the blueberry fields glow. Blueberries have been picked by people, animals and birds and what's left are the red stems and leaves. The brilliant reds even stand out in moonlight.

Summer Squall

Blue Squall 20 x 20 on wood panel by Gwen Sylvester
One of the most refreshing things that I can think of is a passing summer storm as seen from a beautiful shoreline.

Advice to Artists

This morning I watched an interview with performance artist Laurie Anderson. I loved her multi media work when I was in art school. Here she talks about the importance staying flexible and free as an artist. Her advice to artists, especially young ones is to avoid "Branding".  I like this, although she points out the reality that in the commodity driven world that we live in, a certain amount of branding can help galleries to sell your work.

Laurie Anderson Interview

I've come across other interviews which have a similar message. Here's a link to an interview with some wonderful advice for artists from David Bowie:

And here's an entertaining and insightful speech for a university graduation ceremony by artist and commedian Tim Minchin.

Advice from Tim Minchin

One interesting point he makes is : "You don't have to have or chase a dream". Instead passionate dedication to many short term goals. Be Micro-ambitious" The next worthy ambition might be in your periphery. It's All Luck! Also ..don't seek happiness, stay busy, exercise...take care of your body. Be hard on your opinions... examine them constantly... think critically and identify your biases. Share your ideas and be a teacher. Define yourself by what you love, not what you hate.

I find these interviews and lectures to be enlivening and hope that anyone who comes across this post will take the time to watch.

Posting old and new work

My intent of this blog is to share and catalog some of my paintings and other art projects from the past and present.  My other blog is more about current projects and general musings about art.
